Mild Steel: The Standard Specification for Most Surrey Projects

Mild steel is the most versatile material for fabricated gates. It can be formed into virtually any profile, welded cleanly, and finished to a high standard. It is heavier than aluminium and therefore more substantial in feel and in appearance. A steel gate of moderate dimensions typically weighs 80 to 150 kilograms per leaf, depending on the section size and infill pattern. This weight requires a motor rated appropriately for the load.

The critical specification for outdoor steel is the surface treatment. Hot-dip galvanising followed by powder coating is the correct and only professionally acceptable specification for any steel gate in Surrey. The gate is immersed in molten zinc after fabrication, creating a metallurgical bond that protects every surface including internal faces and weld points. Cold galvanising, zinc primer, or paint alone are all inferior specifications that will require significant remedial attention within a few years on a Surrey residential property exposed to the elements.

Aluminium: Lightweight, Low Maintenance, and Corrosion-Free

Aluminium does not rust. This is its primary advantage over steel for outdoor gate applications, and it is a significant one. An aluminium gate does not require galvanising because the material itself does not corrode in the way steel does. The powder coat finish on an aluminium gate provides UV protection and weather resistance, but its failure does not expose a substrate that will then corrode. This makes aluminium gates substantially lower maintenance than equivalent steel gates over a twenty-year horizon.

Aluminium is considerably lighter than steel: an aluminium gate of equivalent dimensions to a steel gate will typically weigh 35 to 60 per cent less. This reduced weight has two practical implications. First, it allows a smaller, less expensive motor to be specified for the same gate dimensions. Second, it reduces the structural load on the gate posts and foundations, which matters on sites where post conditions are less than ideal.

Design Options: Where Steel Has the Advantage

Steel can be formed, pressed, and welded into more complex profiles than aluminium. Curved sections, scroll elements, and decorative ironwork details are all more naturally executed in steel than in aluminium, which has different working characteristics. For this reason, steel remains the preferred material for decorative residential gates where the design involves traditional gate-making elements. Aluminium is more naturally suited to clean geometric designs: flat bars, horizontal rails, and uniform vertical infill that read as contemporary rather than traditional.

Both materials are available in any RAL powder coat colour. Anthracite grey (RAL 7016) is the most commonly specified colour across the Surrey commuter belt for both steel and aluminium gates, followed by black (RAL 9005) for more traditional designs, and sage green or similar muted palette colours for period properties and conservation area installations.

The total installed cost difference, including motor and access control, between a steel and aluminium gate of comparable specification is often less than the material price difference suggests, and the long-term cost of ownership favours aluminium on most Surrey residential projects.

Powder Coat Colour and Finish

Both steel and aluminium accept powder coat finishes well. Textured powder coats, which hide minor surface imperfections and provide a slightly softer appearance than a flat coat, are increasingly popular in the Surrey residential market. Satin or silk finishes rather than full gloss are the current preference for most residential projects, as they read as more refined and are less susceptible to surface marks.
