Oxted's metal-gate market is distinctive because of the dual context: a Surrey Hills AONB setting on the North Downs slopes combined with the Old Oxted conservation area in the medieval village core. The town has a genuine period character that separates it from the more suburban Tandridge settlements, and the metal-gate work reflects that. Restrained wrought iron on the Edwardian and inter-war detached property on the slopes above the town, with a sympathetic specification register that acknowledges the AONB landscape rather than announcing against it.

Conservation area proposals in Old Oxted follow a different pattern from the rest of the town.
