Question 1

What is the practical difference between steel, aluminium, and wrought iron gates?

Accepted Answer

Mild steel is the standard fabrication material for bespoke gates across Surrey. It is strong, weldable into any profile, and takes a hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated finish that protects against rust for 20 years or more. Aluminium is lighter than steel, will not rust under any conditions, and is the preferred choice for very wide gates or heavy automation where reducing the moving weight extends motor life. Wrought iron is a specialist material, hand-forged by blacksmiths rather than fabricated, and is used on high-value period and estate properties where the authentic texture and character of the material justify the additional cost. Surrey is one of the strongest markets for wrought iron residential gates in the country, particularly in the Weybridge, Cobham, Esher, and Reigate areas.

Question 2

Do metal gates rust in Surrey conditions?

Accepted Answer

Untreated steel and iron will corrode in Surrey conditions over time. The correct specification is hot-dip galvanising before powder coating, which encases the steel in zinc before the polymer finish is applied. This two-stage protection means that any chip or scratch in the powder coat exposes zinc rather than steel, and the zinc continues to protect through a sacrificial mechanism. A gate specified this way should not require remedial rust treatment for 20 years or more in Surrey conditions. Aluminium is the sensible alternative where longevity with zero rust risk is the priority, as it forms a stable oxide layer that protects the metal without any additional treatment.

Question 3

Can I commission a bespoke design for a metal gate in Surrey?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Bespoke fabrication is standard practice for metal gates in Surrey, and most metal gate installations involve a custom design rather than an off-the-shelf product. Installers work with specialist fabricators who can produce anything from a straightforward horizontal-bar contemporary gate to an ornate estate gate with scrollwork, a family crest, and gilded finials. Most fabricators provide detailed CAD drawings and, for larger projects, 3D renders showing the gate in position on your property. The design and approval process typically adds 2 to 4 weeks before fabrication begins.

Question 4

How long does a driveway gate installation take in Surrey?

Accepted Answer

Standard installations take 2 to 4 working days from the first day on site. Groundwork and foundations are completed on day one, the gate is hung and automation is wired on day two, and commissioning, intercom setup, and handover are completed on the final day. Bespoke fabricated gates, particularly wrought iron or hardwood designs made to measure, require a manufacturing lead time of 3 to 6 weeks before the installation date. Your installer will provide a confirmed programme at the site survey stage.

Question 5

Do I need planning permission for driveway gates in Surrey?

Accepted Answer

Most residential driveway gates fall under permitted development and do not require an application. The general rule is that gates under 2 metres in height that open inward onto your property are exempt, with the limit dropping to 1 metre for gates adjacent to a classified road. Listed buildings, conservation area properties, Surrey Hills AONB sites, and Green Belt land with Article 4 Directions are outside standard permitted development and may require consent. Surrey has a high concentration of designated areas and your installer will confirm the planning position at the site survey.

Question 6

What warranty should I expect from a Surrey gate installer?

Accepted Answer

A reputable installer provides separate warranties for the gate and the automation. Motor and control board warranties from quality manufacturers such as FAAC, BFT, CAME, and Nice are typically 2 to 5 years. The gate structure and finish should be warranted for a minimum of 5 years, with better manufacturers offering 10 to 25 years on powder-coated aluminium and certified timber products such as Accoya. Always ask for the warranty terms in writing before signing off a quote.

Question 7

What motor brands do Surrey installers use?

Accepted Answer

The quality brands installed across the Surrey residential market are FAAC, BFT, CAME, Nice, and Beninca. All maintain active parts availability for their motor ranges for at least a decade after production, which matters when a component needs replacing several years into the installation. Be cautious of quotes specifying unbranded or unfamiliar motors without a clear justification.
