Shere is widely described as one of England's most beautiful villages, with a streetscape so photogenic it was used as a filming location for The Holiday in 2006. The village sits in Guildford borough at the heart of the Surrey Hills AONB, with the Tillingbourne running through the village centre and a conservation area covering the Grade I listed St James's Church and the Grade II-starred cottages along Middle Street and Lower Street. The surrounding Shere civil parish extends to include Gomshall, Peaslake, Holmbury St Mary, and much of Abinger Hammer.
